WVU Research Corporation
The West Virginia Legislature determined that the future of economic development in the state will depend in part upon research developed at the state institutions of higher education, and enhanced research opportunities for state institution of higher education will promote the general economic welfare of the citizens of the state. The WVURC was therefore created as a not-for-profit corporation in 1987 to foster and support research at West Virginia University, and to provide evaluation, development, patenting, management, and marketing services for inventions of the faculty, staff and students of the University. The Corporation also serves as the fiscal agent for sponsored programs on behalf of the University.
The WVURC entered into an affiliation agreement with the West Virginia Board of Regents on behalf of West Virginia University in 1989 to provide for services and activities related to the promotion, encouragement, and stimulation of research. The Corporation is governed by by-laws revised in 1998 and operational procedures amended in 1997, or as may be amended in the future. Members of the WVURC Board of Directors include senior University administrators and dean and faculty representatives.
The Research Corporation consists of a board of directors headed by a chair (the president of the University). The vice chair is the provost of the University; the executive director is is the vice president for Research; the secretary is the director of Sponsored Programs; the treasurer is the vice president for Finance. In addition to these officers, the vice president for Health Sciences, several deans, and three faculty members recommended by the Senate Executive Committee serve on the board of the Corporation. The board is required to meet three times a year, though it may meet more frequently; meetings are open to the public.

Functions
The WVU Research Corporation receives and administers funds awarded by external agencies for research and other activities. The Corporation is also responsible for managing intellectual properties sponsored for the University. The primary responsibilities in the intellectual property arena involve the protection of intellectual property by patents, copyrights and commercialization, e.g. licensing, start up companies.
