Dr. Sharma oversees university-wide research development, including the Associate Deans of Research across all WVU Colleges, Office of Research Program Management, Shared Research Facilities, High Performance Computing, and various WVU research centers.

Dr. Sharma holds the endowed Marshall Miller Professorship of Energy in the Department of Geology and Geography at WVU. She is a geoscientist with more than two decades of experience in leading large-scale, interdisciplinary research initiatives spanning multiple institutions, with funding from a wide range of federal agencies including DOE, NETL, NSF, DOI, EPA, and USGS, as well as state and industry sources.She brings that experience to bear on research strategy and growth at the institutional level, with a focus on deepening federal, state, and industry partnerships and translating complex research into actionable strategies that drive the long-term growth of the university's research enterprise.

Her technical expertise lies at the intersection of core geology and advanced geochemistry, applied to understanding and optimizing subsurface energy systems—including unconventional shale and coal reservoirs, geothermal systems, carbon and hydrogen storage, and critical mineral recovery.
