NEH Summer Stipend Internal Competition

National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. These stipends support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months, and successful applicants receive a stipend of $6,000. Although NEH summer stipends are awarded to individual scholars and not organizations, faculty members teaching full-time at colleges or universities must be nominated by their institutions to apply for a summer stipend. Each institution is limited to two nominations. Therefore, this is a limited submission mechanism, which will require two internal competitions.

First, each college must conduct an internal competition in order to nominate up to two faculty members for consideration by the Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR). Second, the Office of the VPR will review the materials submitted by the colleges, and make the final decision regarding the two WVU nominees.

In order to be considered, faculty members who meet the NEH Summer Stipend eligibility criteria must submit a one-page Letter of Intent to their college research office. Please contact your college research office for more information.

This LOI must include:

  1. Significance and Contribution
  2. Organization and Methods
  3. Competencies, skills, and access
  4. Final Product and Dissemination.

If the application is a resubmission to NEH or a rejection from another external sponsor, include the unedited reviewer comments, and up to one additional page describing the proposal improvement plan. Each College will submit up to two nominees to the Research Office. The VPR office will notify the internal competition award recipients approximately two weeks after submission. If selected as a WVU nominee, faculty will be expected to work with their college Research Office to prepare the final application.
