National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. These stipends support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months, and successful applicants receive a stipend of $8,000.
Although NEH summer stipends are awarded to individual scholars and not organizations, tenure-track faculty members teaching full-time at colleges or universities must be nominated by their institutions to apply for a summer stipend. Each institution is limited to one nomination.
Therefore, this is a limited submission mechanism, which will require two internal competitions.
First, each college must conduct an internal competition in order to nominate one faculty member for consideration by the Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR). Second, the Office of the VPR will review the materials submitted by the colleges, and make the final decision regarding the WVU nominee.
In order to be considered, faculty members who meet the NEH Summer Stipend eligibility criteria (see NEH Summer Stipend Notice (PDF) and note that eligibility requirements have changed) must submit a one-page Letter of Intent to their college research office by July 29, 2024.
This LOI must include:
- Significance and Contribution
- Organization and Methods
- Competencies, skills, and access
- Final Product and Dissemination
If the application is a resubmission to NEH or a rejection from another external sponsor, include the unedited reviewer comments, and up to one additional page describing the proposal improvement plan. Each College will submit one nominee to the Research Office by July 31 to mcpage@mail.wvu.edu. The VPR office will notify the internal competition award recipients by Aug 7, 2024. If selected as a WVU nominee, faculty will be expected to work with their college Research Office to prepare the final application.
A full description and instructions for applying to the NEH summer stipend program can be found on the NEH Summer Stipend Notice (PDF). The NEH Deadline is September 18, 2024.
