NSF Link

Deadlines

  • WVU Internal Letter of Intent Due: July 8, 2024
  • Agency Full Proposal Due: September 6, 2024

Synopsis

The NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) program is designed to encourage the development and implementation of bold, new, and potentially transformative models for STEM graduate education training. The NRT program seeks proposals that ensure that graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers.

This program is dedicated to effective training of STEM graduate students in high priority interdisciplinary research areas, through the use of a comprehensive traineeship model that is innovative, evidence-based, and aligned with changing workforce and research needs. Strategic collaborations with the private sector, non-governmental organizations, government agencies, national labs, field stations, teaching and learning centers, informal science centers, and academic partners are encouraged. NRT especially welcomes proposals that pair with the efforts of NSF INCLUDES to diversify STEM talent.

Since FY2021, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE) have been added to the national priority areas in which the NRT Program encourages proposals. The NSF seeks proposals on any interdisciplinary research theme of national priority, with special emphasis on AI and QISE and the six research areas within NSF’s 10 Big Ideas (Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR), The Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier (FW-HTF), Navigating the New Arctic (NNA), Windows on the Universe: The Era of Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (WoU), The Quantum Leap: Leading the Next Quantum Revolution (QL), and Understanding the Rules of Life: Predicting Phenotype (URoL)). Historically ~15 NRT Traineeship Track Awards (14-15 anticipated) are made each year for up to five (5) years in duration with a total budget up to $3,000,000.

Institutions are limited to participation in only two proposals per competition. Participation includes serving as a lead organization on a non-collaborative proposal or as a lead organization, non-lead organization, or sub-awardee on a collaborative proposal.

If you are interested in submitting for this solicitation or are part of a collaborative submission with partners beyond WVU, you must first submit an internal Letter of Intent (LOI). Depending on the response the Research Office may elect to run an internal selection process.
